Often Asked Questions.

Artificial Turf

How to I maintain my lawn?

Artificial grass requires very low maintenance. A light brushing every few months would be a good start.

How long does it last?

Your grass can last more than 10 years. It doesn’t fade, it doesn’t break, and it doesn’t stain.

Driveways

Is a resin driveway better than block paving?

Block paving, otherwise known as a brick driveway, achieves a certain look due to its nature of being laid down brick by brick. Resin driveways, meanwhile, take less time to implement because they comprise of a smooth base with a permeable surface on the top.

Resin on average it’s a quicker, more modern, and highly weather-resistant driveway option that has many benefits over block paving.

Is resin cheaper than paving?

Resin driveways are generally cheaper when compared to block paving.  Resin driveways stay looking their very best for years to come, whereas old-style block paving can be prone to chips and tends to require much more maintenance, therefore, a resin driveway is cheaper both in the short and long term.

How long does resin last?

When properly installed and looked after using minimal maintenance, a high-quality resin driveway can last for more than 25 years. Resin bound paving is purposely designed to be long-lasting and durable. The occasional sweep and a power wash will keep it looking as good as the day it was first laid down.

Do weeds grow through resin driveways?

No. Due to the porous nature of resin bound surfaces, water easily drains through it instead of settling on top of the surface. This means any weed seedlings become starved of water, preventing the roots from establishing and stopping the weed from thriving.

Fencing

How high can a garden fence be?

Generally need planning permission if the fence in question is higher than two metres, or as low as one metre if the fence is to be built by the side of the road. If your fence exceeds either of these heights by accident, don’t worry: you can always apply for retroactive planning permission. However, it’s worth noting that this may not always be accepted.

Wood or concrete fence posts?

This will ultimately come down to individual tastes and needs. Concrete fence posts tend to be sturdier than their wooden equivalents, and require less attention and maintenance too, lasting for decades if kept in good condition. Wooden fence posts, on the other hand, tend to look more stylish.

What are the different types of wooden fences?

Closeboard Fencing:

These are great for maintaining privacy with its overlapping wooden boards that create a solid boundary between your garden and the outside world. They’re a fantastic option if you want to deter intruders and stop pets from escaping.

Picket Fencing:

The classic option for a more decorative structure. They are traditionally used at the front of the property but if you don’t mind a bit more visibility, they would work in the back garden too. These are the perfect option if you want something more decorative than functional, since they won’t stop any determined pets from escaping!

Overlap Fencing:

A more affordable choice. It offers privacy and security without breaking the bank. It has all the benefits of closeboard fencing but may not be as robust in really bad weather. A little bit more maintenance might be required to prolong the life of these fence panels.

Featheredge Fencing:

Built to last. Its structure of overlapping boards supported by a horizontal batten makes it a robust contender against the stormy British weather. It will provide you with privacy and security while spending time in the garden in summer whilst standing strong over the winter months.

Decking

Which is cheaper plastic or wooden decking?

The initial cost of plastic decking tends to be more expensive than the price of wooden decking. The minimal maintenance means that the upfront cost is likely to be the only time you need to cash out on your plastic deck.  Though wooden decking comes at a lower upfront cost, the cost of maintenance will accumulate.

Do I need planning permission for decking?

Almost in most cases, no. However, if you plan to deck more than half of your garden or the decking is more than 30cm off the ground then you should seek advice from the planning department of your local council as you may need planning permission, building regulations approval or both.

What’s the downside of plastic decking?

In very hot sunny days, plastic decks can get very hot on the soles of the feet and actually radiate heat, making them uncomfortable.

How long does decking last?

Softwood decking will typically last between 10 to 15 years and will need to be regularly treated. Well-maintained hardwood decking can last for longer and, in some cases, can last for as long as 25 years.  A well-maintained plastic deck should last upwards of 25 years, ensuring you invest in a high-quality subframe to support your deck will ensure it lasts longer.

Regular maintenance is another essential factor that will impact the lifespan of your decking area.
